Frustrated with your phone's battery dying during navigation? Google Maps is rolling out a new Power Saving Mode, but here's the catch: it's not for everyone. This innovative feature is currently exclusive to the Google Pixel 10 series, leaving many Android users in the dark.
So, what's the big deal? Well, turn-by-turn navigation in Google Maps is notorious for draining your battery. It's a power-hungry process, constantly using location services, mobile data, and, most significantly, keeping your screen on. The new Power Saving Mode aims to tackle this head-on.
This mode, available only on the Pixel 10, promises to extend your battery life by up to four hours during navigation. How? By simplifying the display to a black-and-white layout that focuses on essential information, like your next turn. To activate it, simply press your Pixel 10's power button while navigating. It's designed primarily for driving, but initial tests suggest it could also work for walking or two-wheeler directions, though public transit support remains unconfirmed.
But here's where it gets controversial... This feature leverages a new Android capability called ‘AOD Min Mode.’ This allows apps to display full-screen activities on the Always-On Display (AOD). This is a game-changer because the AOD uses an ultra-low-power display state with fewer colors, reduced brightness, and a lower refresh rate. For phones with OLED displays, like the Pixel 10, the black-and-white interface further conserves power by turning off black pixels completely.
The Power Saving Mode is rolling out now to Pixel 10 users as part of the November 2025 Pixel Drop.
And this is the part most people miss... While this is great news for Pixel 10 owners, the exclusivity raises questions. Will Google expand this feature to older Pixel phones? It's possible there are technical limitations preventing it. And what about other Android devices? Will Google open up the ‘AOD Min Mode’ feature to other developers in Android 17?
